Asics' Story
At a time when the only sports shoes available were canvas slippers or tabi socks, Asics founder Mr Onitsuka made it his mission to help people move better. He designed every shoe with the athlete in mind. His first basketball shoe used innovative suction-cup technology to help basketball players get more grip on the court. When marathon runners’ shoes left them with painful blisters, he introduced smart air-flow technology, increasing ventilation and lessening inflammation
1945
After returning home from the war in 1945, Kihachiro Onitsuka started Onitsuka Co., Ltd in Kobe, Japan. He had the ambition to use sport to improve the physical and mental health of people and recognised that sport had the power to do just that.
1950
The first shoe created by Onitsuka Co., Ltd. was a basketball shoe. Prototypes were repeatedly tested by leading basketball powerhouses and refined by Mr Onitsuka until the first model was released in the spring of 1950.
1951
One day, while eating octopus, Mr Onitsuka found a piece stuck to the bottom of his bowl. Inspired by the grip of the octopus tentacles, he designed a basketball shoe with suction cup-like features - the first of its kind.
1961
Abebe Bikila, the first Ethiopian gold medalist, caught the attention of Mr Onitsuka as he was known for running barefoot. After being invited
to Japan as a guest runner at the Mainichi Marathon, Mr Onitsuka met Abebe to inspect his feet, get his measurements for a pair of shoes, and finally convince him he could wear a shoe that felt the same as running barefoot. Abebe won the marathon.
1977
In July 1977, ONITSUKA Co., Ltd., GTO Co., Ltd., and JELENK Co., Ltd. merged to form ASICS Corporation. ASICS is an acronym inspired by the Latin phrase ‘Mens Sana in Corpore Sano’. And although we replaced the word ‘Mens’ with “Anima” which means “vigorous mind”, the essence of the phrase remains the same. Anima Sana in Corpore Sano - a Sound Mind in a Sound Body.
1985
The ASICS Institute of Sports Science (ISS) was established in 1985, formed from the Technology Research Department and Shoe Development Centre at the time. The ISS was tasked with conducting more detailed and wide-ranging research into sports from a scientific standpoint.
2007
At 89 years of age, Asics founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, passed away. But until this day we continue to honour him each year on his birthday on 29 May
2018
ASICS entered the global tennis stage as they signed tennis champion, Novak Djokovic.
